Obesity, diabetes, and heart disease are on the rise in the U.S., especially among members of the baby boomer generation.
Many in this age group are working professionals that have not made fitness a part of their daily lives. According to the National Institute of Health Survey- early release for 2007, 8.2 percent of Americans within the ages of 45-55 are living with diabetes. These numbers go up with age and increase 13.9 percent for those between 55-65 and 18.2 percent for those adults over the age of 65.
When those numbers are paired with the statistics for obesity the results are astounding. According to the same early results of the NIH survey, 25 percent of Americans are obese (body mass index of 30kg/m2 or greater) and of those, the group with the highest rate of obesity are those between the ages of 40 and 59 at 30 percent of the population. According to the American Heart Association more than 148,000 Americans under the age of 65 were killed by cardiovascular disease in 2004. This number has decreased in the subsequent years, however not enough to remove this disease as the number one cause of death for Americans. Prevention and awareness are key components to decreasing these drastic numbers.
There have been numerous studies to validate medical and fitness professionals urging us to get regular exercise and eat a sensible diet. However many people feel it is a daunting task to “become healthy” at this time in their lives. This is especially true for those that have never been physically active in their childhood and young adult lives. Many working professionals feel that they do not have the time to work on their health and wellness. Muscular strength, cardiovascular fitness, and flexibility are all key components of living fit. Maintaining mental acuity, and stress reduction begins with a healthy lifestyle. What may be a great surprise is that you can obtain all of these goals while still living a busy professional lifestyle with the assistance of qualified health and fitness professionals.
